Episode 31: Katie Evans on craft for kids, book publishing and how teenagers are easier than babies

11/11/2015

Picture
The hilarious Katie Evans had a varied career, including stocking the heavily scented shelves of Lush, to acting on Neighbours, to antique selling, before settling on a career in publishing after being inspired by Seinfeld's Elaine Benes.

Katie worked for eight years at Penguin editing children's books and now works as a freelance writer and editor. She is a mum to a teenage girl and a young son, and has recently written a craft book called Little Things for Busy Hands  (although she admits that her own kids are not that into crafting!).

Aside from huge tangents about our Neighbours-watching days and the history of Penguin,  Katie takes us behind the scenes in the world of children's books and publishing, and gives her top tips for keeping your house looking presentable with kids around.

Rachel Power's 2008 book The Divided Heart is one of our favourite homages to the creative mother and is a treasured bedside book for many creative women. We chatted to Rachel in Emma's kitchen (complete with dishwasher noises!) about enjoying our work and feeling guilty about not feeling guilty "enough", how to prioritise creativity and artistic practice while raising kids and how it's okay to not enjoy crafting with your kids!

Rachel's book was re-released as Motherhood and Creativity in April this year, and features updated and new interviews with mothers including Claudia Karvan, Pip Lincolne, Holly Throsby and our own alumni Lily Mae Martin.

To kick off 2015, we interviewed artist, writer and mother of one Lily Mae Martin. Lily's incredible drawings and paintings have been exhibited all over the world and focus on portraiture and the human form. A drawing of her daughter Anya is included in the current group exhibition Intersection – The Art of Motherhood at Red Gallery in Melbourne.

Lily’s daughter Anya was born in Wales and the family moved to Berlin when she was just six months old, making her quite the intrepid toddler. Emma sent her noisy family to the park so we could sit at her kitchen bench and chat about making art, having babies in a foreign country and talking to kids about death.

In this episode, we mention writer Penny Russon and Rachel Power's book Motherhood and Creativity: The Divided Heart, in which Lily is interviewed.

In this episode, you will hear the hands-down best poo story we have ever come across. We laughed and cringed and shuddered at Jasmine Mansbridge's horrific and awesome tale. Jasmine is tackling parenting from both sides - as the mum of two teenagers and two toddlers (plus another one on the way!), she is balancing both temper tantrums and teenage angst, along with her own creative practice.

Jasmine is an accomplished and prolific artist with several solo exhibitions under her belt, including an exhibition in New York. Her new show, entitled “The Space Between” is being exhibited at  RTIST GALLERY in Melbourne, until 5 June 2014.
